Character Creation Questions
1. How and where do I make my character?
Using the character application (click), go to the board titled "Pending Characters" and fill out the code with information about your cat!
If you need further help, we have a Beginner's Guide (click).
2. What rank of characters can I create via the application?
You may create a kit, apprentice, or warrior.
3. Can my loner, rogue, or kittypet join a Clan? Can my character's history be that they joined the Clan when they were young?
This is dependent on each Clan's policy regarding outsiders. Please consult the About Each Clan thread (click) for more information on each Clan!
4. Can my cat be [breed name]?
We allow most breeds--for example, you can make a cat that looks like a Bengal or you can make a pointed cat (such as a Siamese or Burmese); however, they cannot be purebred unless they are kittypets. Here is a list of breeds we do not allow:
-Persians and other flat-faced cats, as they are known to have breathing problems
-Sphynxes and other hairless cats, as they will not survive snowy winters outside
-Munchkins, as they are small, cannot run well, and may have spine-related health problems that lead to dying during kithood
-Savannahs and other breeds that are extremely close to wild cats in nature, size, and temperament
More breeds are subject to be added later.
5. What kind of names can my character have?
We have an Acceptable Prefix and Suffix list (click). If you don't find the prefix/suffix you'd like on that thread, then check out our Name Suggestions thread (click)! If you post the desired prefix/suffix, we'll take it into consideration and get back to you as quickly as possible.
6. Why did my male tortoiseshell (or calico) not get accepted?
Male tortoiseshells and calicoes are extremely rare in real life--about 1 in 5,000, in fact. The genes they carry are sex-linked, and typically only cats with XX genes have those coat patterns. A male tortoiseshell or calico almost always has XXY genes, leading to infertility and other problems.
You cannot create one through application due to their rarity, but you may be able to get one through a litter roll, so keep an eye out!
7. Can my character have a defect?
A character cannot be made from scratch as fully blind, deaf, or missing a limb. A character cannot be created polydactyl, or with virtiligo or albinism. Several of these are included in our litter rolls.
A character can have one blind eye as a result of an injury in history, but it has to actually make sense and it should work with the character as part of who they are--it shouldn't be added in just for the "fun" of it/just for the sake of getting around the rule.
Your character can end up with defects in roleplay via injury or illness at any time, but please note that how their Clan leader deals with this will vary. Some leaders might retire the cat to the elders' den, whereas others might be more willing to accommodate the cat in other ways.
Please note that having a defect does not increase your character's chances in becoming a medicine cat apprentice in any way, shape, or form.
8. Can my character be a loner who joined a Clan?
Through the application process, no. Your character cannot have a history to the effect of having been a loner who joined a Clan at some point in their life.
Through roleplay, potentially. It depends on the leader's personality and whether the leader's roleplayer is interested in having an outsider join their Clan.
If you're interested in your loner joining a Clan, please send a message to the leader's roleplayer (this information can be found in the Allegiances thread) and discuss it with them. They want to plot things out for roleplaying, so come up with some interesting ideas!
9. There is already a character in my chosen Clan with the prefix I want! Do I have to choose a different prefix?
Nope! With the number of characters on Ataxia, there are bound to be repeated prefixes in each Clan. As long as the entire name (prefix and suffix together) hasn't been used, you're all set (check our used names list here).
Activity Check Questions
1. What is an activity check?
An activity check is a bi-monthly thread that the staff post to, well, check to see how active people are!
2. Do I have to post on it?
Yes. If you do not post in the activity check, you will be marked as inactive, and after a certain period of time, your account will be deleted.
3. What if I know I'm going to be away for a while?
Simply message a staff member or post on our Hellos and Goodbyes board. We don't need to know the reason, all we need is a heads-up that you'll be away for a bit.
4. What if I adopted a character out for a plot and their roleplayer's account was deleted?
If the member in question had their account deleted, and they did not say what to do with their characters otherwise, the characters involved in plots may be re-adopted out with fresh applications made.
1. Do cats have to be mates in order to have kits?
No! Flings can be a fun plot device.
2. How many threads do two characters need in order to request a litter?
One thread with five posts minimum.
3. How many threads does a queen need to be pregnant in before giving birth?
4. If the roleplayer of the mother never makes the birth thread, what can I do?
If the roleplayer of the mother does not make a birth thread within two weeks, the kits are considered born and you may begin to play them.
5. Are birth threads required?
Nope! You're free to send a message to the Clan's leader and medicine cat, the father of the kits, and the roleplayers of the kits when you're ready for the kits to be born.
6. How many kits can I adopt at once?
You can adopt one kit per litter, and you must wait for two litters to be rolled before you can adopt another kit. We have a set of litter adoption rules here! These rules are for both players looking to adopt kits and players who are playing the parents.
7. How are litters rolled?
Litters are rolled using a system we wrote that revolves around random.org.
1. What are rogues, loners, and kittypets?
Kittypets are all cats who live with and depend on Twolegs. They may still go outside, hunt, or even get into fights, but in the end, they'll always return to their human's homes. Loners and rogues, meanwhile, both live on their own. Rogues tend to cause trouble for the Clans (all exiled cats are classified as rogues), whereas loners are content doing their own thing.
2. How are high positions chosen?
Out-of-character, the staff members discuss the next leader/deputy/medicine cat/medicine cat apprentice (with the exception of DawnClan, explained further below).
In-character, each Clan is different.
In ScorchClan and DawnClan, the leader will announce their next deputy in a ceremony, as it's done in the books.
In RippleClan, the medicine cat will receive a dream from a StarClan cat who will tell them the Clan's next deputy.
In ThistleClan, the leader will announce to the Clan their choice of deputy, and the Clan will vote.
3. What are the requirements for my character to become an apprentice, and then a warrior?
For a kit to become an apprentice, they must roleplay in at least one thread.
For an apprentice to become a warrior, they must have two training threads. These can include exploring the territory or learning to hunt, fight, swim, climb, etc., as long as there are two threads. The apprentice may then do a Trial (click) to earn their warrior name.
4. Who uses the Admin account?
Admin is co-run by Ataxia's four admins: Stormy, Rogue, Legit, and Kiya. It is not used for roleplaying, only to post important information and site-wide announcements. This makes running things and, if the time comes, transferring power more smoothly.
5. How do I use Posting Templates?
The Posting Template area can be accessed from each members' profile settings. First, go to your Profile, then click Edit Profile, then click the Settings tab; however, for some reason, the plug-in does not show right away, so you must reload the page until the Posting Template area appears. From there you can create Templates that will let you save whatever you'd like for easy access in your posts.
6. I need to pay someone for some sort of service, such as art. Where do I go?
Go to the Staff Requests board (click) and post a thread asking for a money transfer from your account to another member's account.
7. My apprentice's mentor disappeared! What should I do?
If your mentor's roleplayer has been gone without notice for two weeks or longer, then feel free to find your character a new mentor via the mentor-finding board, PMing a member who roleplays another warrior in your cat's Clan, or asking around in the chat!
Your apprentice doesn't have to have their training threads all done by their mentor, either. It's acceptable to hop into an open training thread and that counts toward your apprentice's two training threads.
8. What is this "New Member" under my name? When does it change to "Settled Member"?
That's your member rank! It will increase when you hit certain post milestones (100, 500, etc).
9. What kind of contests are held on Ataxia?
All kinds! We have monthly writing prompts and we have the occasional art contest. If you have any contest ideas you'd like to see, let us know in the Suggestions board or by private messaging one of our admins (Stormy , Legit , Rogue , or Kiya ).
9. How many apprentices can my warrior have?
Three is the limit. Make sure you can handle all of the apprentices your character takes on! Don't overload yourself.
10. How often do characters age on Ataxia?
Aging is individual. You can age all of your characters the same way, or you can age each character whenever you feel it's necessary. There is no universal aging system--you do not have to age your character X moons every Y. Go at your own pace.
11. How often do leaders hold ceremonies?
It all depends on how busy the leaders' roleplayers are.
12. What do "Open", "Tagged", and "Private" mean in thread titles?
An open thread is one in which anyone is encouraged to reply.
A tagged or private thread is one in which only users who have been tagged (@ username, without the space) may join.
13. I'd like a bit of a change from the default theme for a while. Does Ataxia have other themes?
Profile > Edit Profile > Settings > Forum Theme. There is a drop-down list of our themes. When you pick one, scroll down and save your settings.
