The brown torbie walked out of the bushes with a blackbird she just caught. She has gone hunting earlier that day so she had enough time to find prey that has became scarce lately.
As she went past the bushes and a view of a clearing opened in front of her, the she-cat froze in place. Three cats sat in the clearing, and they weren't just some cats.
It was her family. Just as she remembered them.
Her father, a large flame-colored tabby tom, her mother, a solid brown cat with white throat and paws, and her older sister, a paler shade of her father's color, but without stripes.
She didn't wait for anything, dropped her prey and ran toward her long-lost family to reunite with them after the long ten moons.
But there was something that forced her to stop. Their looks, they were full of pain, and anger.
"Do you see what have you done, Cherry?" her father meowed with his deep, usually soothing, but now cold and accusive voice. The adressed she-cat looked at him with confused gaze. What was he talking about?
Then her mother and sister stepped to a side, and revealed what has been hidden behind them to this moment.
The body of her brother, mauled by the fangs and claws of a badger, his brown fur stained with blood, one eye and almost half of his face torn off..
She stepped back, closing her eyes from the horrible sight and shaking her head to get rid of the memory. But her family, they were still there, and haven't left her at peace.
"Do you realise what mistake you have made, Cherry?" her mother hissed with tears in her eyes. "Do you see what has your stupid idea caused?"
"If it weren't for you, Cherry," her sister joined them, "our brother would still be alive!"
She kept stepping back, folding back her ears to block out their words, and eyes shut, but they were coming closer to her.
"It's all your fault, Cherry!" "Why couldn't you use your brain, Cherry?" "Your brother is dead because of you, Cherry!"
'No, no, I'm Robin, I'm Robin, I'm Robin!'
Then the voices disappeared and she opened her eyes. Where was- oh, yes. On that tree with the two boys. Robin let out a sigh as she sat up. Another nightmare. These and similar have haunted her sleep since that day.
Just now she realised the cold and soggy feeling around her eyes. Even though she knew what it was, she still raised her paw ad touched the fur right below her eye. Tears. Of course.
She quickly licked her paw and gave her face a quick wash, before getting up amd climbing a bit further on the branch. There she sat down, and gazed into the distance. It was still dark, but far beyond the trees a lighter line on the horizon was visible.
Shifting her gaze down, she saw that everything was covered in a sparkling layer of snow that almpst glowed in the dim moonlight.
She looked down at the lower branches at the two toms who have became her companions just the day before. She couldn't clearly see Chasm, for it was difficult to spot him in the darkness due to his black fur. But she could see Cole, the pale ginger tom laying on his branch like a roadkilled frog and muttering something about voles.
Then she turned back and trying to get rid of the memory of this night's nightmare she decided to gave herself a quick bath. To at least try to block out the haunting memories she continuously drew her tongue across her back and the deep ugly scars in a steady rhytm.
